THE GAY DIVORCEE (1934)

The first movie in which the Fred Astaire and Gingers Rogers combination appeared in a starring role.


The Gay Divorce or The Gay Divorcee? The opening credits show the former, which was the title of the original stage production. But the Hays Office (masters of the dreaded “Hays Code” and its stifling ideas of “morality”) insisted on changing the title, on the grounds that while a divorcee could be gay or light-hearted, it would be unseemly to allow a divorce to appear so.

The storyline involves an American woman (Mimi Glossop) going to England to seek a divorce from her husband Cyril, whom she hasn't seen for several years. Following the practice of the time, it’s arranged for her to spend the night in a hotel with a professional co-respondent.

As luck would have it an American dancer (Guy Holden), who briefly met Mimi shortly before arrives at the hotel, only to be mistaken by Mimi for the co-respondent.
